“Without faith it is impossible to please Him…” Hebrews 11:6
This tree sits in south Alabama on property my parents have designated for ministry. Here it looks completely dead. The middle is hollowed out and on this particular morning (12/21 winter solstice), the surrounding fog enhanced its lifeless appearance.
It’s winter.
A season.
Only a moment in time.
In the spring it will be full of blossoms. MONTHS from now. MULTIPLE weeks. The simple swipe of a finger won’t change the season or make it look any different. It takes time. Its appearance today also doesn’t change the fact that this tree is very much alive. Closer examination even now reveal the tiny buds. And to be transparent, I had a moment of doubt as I walked towards the tree to get a closer look. I always try to prepare myself for the year my favorite pear tree doesn’t bloom. It is only a tree and it looks so fragile. I breathed a small sigh of relief as I walked closer. The faithful little buds were there. Signs of life that inspire faith in the beauty to come…

I once had someone ask me why I kept getting “signs” from the Lord to continue in a particular direction I felt the Lord had shown. I didn’t understand the why either. It would have been easier to go another way, but I couldn't deny His leading. The honest response came without much time processing the question... “Because I still believe”. Undeniable, tangible, visible, able to be written down reasons affirming His presence and giving strength to continue. When we see Him, we can always believe in the beauty to come. Daily write down the ways you see Him. Even in your doubts take a step closer believing and see what He reveals. He is faithful. You can trust Him to lead.
The second part of the opening verse: “for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek him…” (Hebrews 11:6)
“Draw near” - Walk towards. “Believe” - Hold in faith as truth. His fingerprints are everywhere and in every season. “He rewards those who seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6) He lets the pure in heart "see" Him. (Matt 5:8)
The evidence is all around…(an encouraging song on Evidence)
Sometimes the "reward" is being able to feel His presence and be reminded of His faithfulness by simply stopping to gaze upon an old leafless pear tree standing in the middle of a field on a cold foggy December morning.
01/02 - Jude 1:2 - May "mercy, peace, and love be yours in abundance."
